Poor Discriminating Against Poor: A Look at The People Who Provide Rotten Service
by PastorPatryse Brown, M.A., M.Div.
The working-class poor are complaining that there is inequality in the distribution of wealth – that the 1% are taking advantage of the working poor. The irony is this: the poor discriminate against and treat unfairly other poor people themselves. Their unequal treatment of certain people is egregious in customer service. Some of these working-class poor provide the worst and the most outrageous customer service to other working class poor that I have ever witnessed.
Let me define who these service workers are who are providing rotten customer service. They are poor, working-class people, most without an education: salespeople in clothing stores, sales people in any low-ranking position, waiters, grocery store clerks, store clerks of any kind, janitors, and on. They include law enforcement and all public employees. These workers are poor, working class, blue-collar workers, and they are busily sizing up and sizing down other poor, working-class people. Their behavior goes completely off the radar with people who have lost their homes.
These low-wage, uneducated, working-class service workers are a paycheck away from the pavement. They don’t have enough money for gas, they have their WIC and they go to their special grocery store to pick up their food, and they have their Section 8 housing. Many have five or more kids. They come from parents who were also poor. They have their big trucks that they can not afford to drive. They work as managers or less at such places as Marie Calendars and other family restaurants, they work as waiters at Denny’s, they work at Starbucks, they work as cashiers and managers at McDonald’s (for goodness sake), and they work as receptionists at local roofing companies.
For those who may own their homes, every month they are scraping to make their mortgages, they are at the hock shop, hocking their guns to make their mortgages, their homes are refinanced to the hilt, and if they own businesses, working as contractors, the books are cooked, and they run all around town trying to collect money from the people who owe them past due bills in order to make the mortgage. They put on their dressy outfits and take the family in the family wagon to a Monterey hotel for the Mother’s Day or Father’s Day buffet for $80-plus per person. Many times, they put it on the card. They can’t turn on the heater to heat their homes. Their houses are cold inside and the refrigerator is commonly empty. They do not have a penny to spare if someone calls to borrow a nickel.
These same people show up at work and have the temerity to look a customer up and down and provide deplorable service to any guest they think sleeps on the sidewalk. These workers, themselves, are a step away from sleeping on the curb. Yet, they fix their eyes on others. Glaring. Thus says the Lord, “Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye and do not consider the plank in your own eye?” (Matthew 7:3)
Poor people need to stop it! Provide quality service to all persons.
Armando Medina, a night manager at Denny’s located at 311 S. Mathilda in Sunnyvale, California, correctly stated, “Whether you buy only tea, you spent your money, and you deserve to receive good service.” Medina provided this response, however, after Letty Hicks initially complained about the rotten service she received from one of the Denny’s waiters. Hicks surmised, "The Denny's waiter, apparently, mentally checked the 'Requires only Marginal Service' box for the level of service he would provide me." Medina assured Hicks that she would never again receive such poor service from that Denny’s restaurant.
Whether consumers make great or little purchases, whether they sleep on the pavement or not, the Lord God commands us to treat others the way we, ourselves, desire to be treated.
Provide others with excellence in customer service that you, yourself, desire to receive. Thus says the Lord, “Whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 7:12)
Repent! The Kingdom of God is at hand. Prepare yourself for the return of Christ.
